DYKELAND

DYKELAND traces the history of the lesbian feminist back-to-the-land community in Southern Oregon from 1974 to the present day. They wanted to create a new world in nature free of men, money, and environmental degradation. They built their own houses, shared gardens and girlfriends, owned and lived on land collectively, and made up the rules as they went along. Some of their utopian ideals were realized while others were not, but they proved that experiments in living in more loving ways with each other and the world around them are worthwhile.

About DYKELAND

A Bit of Background

DYKELAND is a feature-length documentary film that tells the story of lesbians in the 1970s who wanted to create a world outside of mainstream culture and are still at it. The film explores their lives then and now, and the messiness of utopian visions, rural life, and alternative ways of living and aging. DYKELAND is a timely and intimate portrait of lesbian elders with funny and moving stories to tell about how they came to live rurally and in community.
